My PC died this morning and the shop where i take it is closed. The other ones will charghe me 65 bux for diagnostic so I thought id give it a try in here see if yall have any clue

I have PC Comopaq
            1.8 ghz AMD Athlon 64
            512 Ram
            Fx5700fx nvidea

First it would start up and freeze on the desktop but not finish loading. I woas able to move the mousebut the startup menu and bar at the botom didnt appear...
Then I tried another stick of memoriy i had there and it would not start at all and made some beeping sounds when hooked up to power.
In morse code it would be ( _ . . ) one long one and two short.

So if those symptoms point at soemthing id appreciate a reply. I dont wanna drop 70 bux for a diagnostic unless I have to...thanks!

one long and two short would be a display problem. Pull out your Vid card and put it back in. Hopefully it's a bad connection.

If still no luck, look and see if you mobo has onboard video. If so, pull out the card again and try booting while using the mobo vid port. If it works then something wrong with the card.

Blitz? Imp? Muff? Cookie? anything else? You guys are generally a little more exact on the troubleshooting...

google "diagnostic post beeps""namebrand of your board" should call up aome sort of, possible pdf file that would list every last combanation of the posting diagnostic beeps you are receiving.

and yes by the steps sounds like everything was going though posting and when it came to the last steps (generally first keyboard then mouse check all the way down to usb posts. so your bios is sound, that part passes and you make it up to your mouse getting acknowledgement, which is generally Audio/Video related.

at this point i would make the same assumption as balaso, video card.
check seating is proper
try onboard connection for monitor if you have it without your video card mounted.
try a different video ard that works if you can, it will boot up with generic drives for vga mode.
doing these things would isolate where the exact problem is located....if its hardware related.

i had my abit board do this and it was the motherboards controller that went bad.
hence an msi board. (had to differnt computers with new abits do this)

honestly though to make sure go ahead and unplug all your extras, printers joysticks, external speakers(your post beeps come from the tiny onboard) ect just to make ultra sure that the possibilities are limited to things that could go wrong.

but you did mention that you got al the way to your desktop. your system may have crashed, or currupted data for windows boot...this would be the possibilties for software related......

the fact that the post beeps came after your journey of swapping ram, only testing can tell.

yea, if you pc has onboard video you are likely to have a dead mobo, buy new case and new mobo, get a can of air to clan it out.    drop it all in the new box and let her rip.

well, i found out that the beeping was a loose memory stick because i made it stop after i fidled with it and the video card. Now it just gets to the desktop but the icons dont appear or does the task bar at the bottom. Im thinking its windows for sure and hope my hard drive is ok. I have some crazy shit in there :D...from work of course :P
Anyway, I'll post up as soon as I have news.
Thanks for all the imput, it has helped alot maing...

Has it kicked you into Safe Mode? If it hasn't done it for you (usually after an unsuccessful boot), I think you can press/hold F8 right around when the Windows screen comes up and then you can select from a menu.

If you're getting in so you can see a mouse cursor but no taskbar (no background I would guess too), then I would suspect mobo issue (non-video) or Windows issue.

You've tried Ctrl+Alt+Del too, right? What happens when you try that? Note anything like brief hard disk activity.

if you get to the screen that has no taskbar and such...  ctrl+shift+esc  new task   explorer.exe  press enter.

should open your desktop up, then just do a reboot or shutdown and trun it back on.  good luck

i know in another forums im involved in, some fella had actually used his comupter for 2 months with the desktop with no icons start menu ect....he did everything from the ctl-alt-dlt....

IT WAS A VIRUS..
easiest way, make a disk with the installs, DO NOT UPDATE.
avg-finds the 2 or 3 java trojans
spyware doctor-will find approx 750ish virus's
*run these first* both will want to reboot and run again**
*also if you can get to the internet get online scan from Panda or symnaptic*

after this you should update and rerun scans.

adaware-gets rid of files (38 hidden files)
hijack this- read the log file, this should just about tell you whats left of your and what you want gone. (you can post log file and ill let you know whats what).

but honestly, freaking snag a dl of one of the millions of windows, and RELOAD BUDDY...* see if can get in to get files first yo*
